A video interlude: My reading habits

Wednesday, August 20, 2014

I would never have dreamed of making a "booktube" video if I hadn't been tagged by Girl with Her Head in A Book in her "Booktube #3: Reading Habits" post. She kindly allowed the option to respond in words only, but I thought I'd challenge myself and make a video, at least of the more visual parts of my answers.

It wasn't specified that we should keep the chain going, but I'm tagging Monica, Brona and Lark in case they would like to join in, whether by booktubing or blogging (of course, anyone else is welcome to do so as well). Here are the ten questions about reading habits, with my responses. Do let me know if you're posting about them.

1 - Do you have a certain place for reading at home?
I read everywhere, including while brushing my teeth, cooking dinner, and washing the dishes. In the video I show a handy tool I use to do this.
2 - Do you use a bookmark or a random piece of paper?
I like bookmarks but I invariably lose them and end up seizing whatever is at hand.
3 - Can you just stop reading or does it need to be at the end of a chapter or a certain number of pages?
I like to reach at least the end of a section (and will use this as an excuse to keep reading when really I should stop) but I'm not stuck on it. If I only have time to read a couple of paragraphs, that's what I do.
4 - Do you eat or drink while reading?
Frequently, to the detriment of some volumes. I would always read at meals if that weren't a bit antisocial for my family.

5 - Do you read one book at a time or several at once?
Depends on my mood -- sometimes I'll stick to one book for a while, but sometimes I might be reading as many as four or five. If I'm reading something difficult I often like to have something easier alongside it.
6 - Do you read out loud or silently in your head?
By myself I read silently, but I read aloud to my son every night; for a while before we had him I read to my husband at night. It was interesting to read adult books aloud and discover that some of them lend themselves to such treatment, while others do not. However, reading aloud is too slow for me to do all my reading that way -- I also get impatient with audiobooks.
7 - Do you ever read ahead or skip pages?
I do read ahead quite often -- sometimes I can't stand the suspense (will he die, will they get married etc.) and I just have to know. As you can tell, I'm not overly bothered by "spoilers." If I care so little about what happens in a book that I start skipping pages, I'm likely to abandon it altogether, unless I'm just skimming it for some specific purpose.
8 - Breaking the spine or keeping it new?
I don't really have a rule about this. I like to keep books in good condition, but some are just impossible to open and read if the spine is unbroken. I try not to do it if it's not necessary.
9 - Do you write in your books?
Not usually, except for cookbooks, where I often make notes about recipes I adjusted.
10 - What are you currently reading?
I answered this one in detail in the video, along with some of the others.

How about you? What are your reading habits (these or any others)?

  1. Good for you! I was not brave enough and I'm impressed that you did this. In my opinion, it's a completely separate blogging skill to do videos. I want that reading tool thingumbob. It looks fantastic!

    1. I used to prop books up against things, but this is MUCH better. I got it from the Daedalus catalog but I don't think you have that in the UK.

  2. Congrats on your first vlog!
I'm not sure I would be/will be brave enough to do this, but thanks for the tag - I'll think about the questions at work today :-)

    1. I repeat-- the video part is optional! I would never try to pressure anyone into that.

  3. You're braver than I would ever be and did a great job! I'm really looking forward to Hild which is still on order at the library so will have to be patient.

    1. First I got it from the library, but it took me too long to finish, so I bought a copy (I knew I would want to own it). But now I'm STILL not finishing it! I will by the end of the year, I swear.

  4. Heh, I read while brushing my teeth, too! I have to stop myself from reading all the time and just RELAX. I love that you read aloud to your son, too--that's such a special thing, and he'll remember that always.

I'm the opposite of you in a lot of ways as a reader, though--I have tons of bookmarks, need to stop at the end of a chapter if at all possible, and am usually in the middle of a lot of books at the same time.

Fun to see how everyone reads--thanks for sharing your list!

    1. I know, sometimes it's actually dangerous when I'm reading while walking downstairs or something. It's hard not to use every precious moment!
